Using Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG), Firebird Forensics Group identified "Opelika Jane Doe" as Amore Joveah Wiggins. Her skeletal remains were found in Opelika, Alabama, on January 28, 2012. The autopsy determined that the remains belonged to an African American female, aged 4 to 7 years old. The autopsy also revealed evidence of prior physical abuse and malnutrition. Jane Doe’s death was ruled a homicide.
In December 2021, two DNA profiles were obtained from Jane Doe’s scalp and hair by Orthram Inc. and Astea Forensics, respectively. Both DNA profiles were uploaded to GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Opelika Police Department partnered with Firebird Forensics to identify Opelika Jane Doe.
Firebird Forensics participants, including Barbara Rae-Venter, Kathy Johnston and Lonn Rickstrom, assisted Detective Alfred White of the Opelika Police Department, in identifying Jane Doe’s father as Lamar Vickerstaff Jr., who was an Active Duty US Navy member. Lamar and his wife, Ruth Vickerstaff, denied any knowledge of Jane Doe during questioning by Detective White and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) in Jacksonville, FL.
In December 2022, Firebird's IGG researchers determined that Jane Doe’s birth mother was likely Sherry Wiggins of Bal*more, MD. Detec*ve White interviewed Ms. Wiggins, who confirmed that she had a baby girl named Amore Wiggins on January 1, 2006, in Norfolk, VA.
She further revealed that she lost custody of Amore to Ruth and Lamar Vickerstaff in 2009 and was still paying child support. DNA testing of Lamar Vickerstaff and Sherry Wiggins confirmed the identity of Opelika Jane Doe.
On January 17, 2023, the Vickerstaffs were arrested by the Jacksonville FL Sheriff's Department. Lamar Vickerstaff Jr. was charged with Felony Murder, while Ruth Vickerstaff was charged with Failure to Report a Missing Child. They were extradited back to Alabama and are currently awaiting trial. Lamar was denied bail Ruth was granted bail but is required to wear an ankle bracelet.
